Turning the Page
09.06.2008Ellen Page has become Hollywood's one to watch since her fantastic stint in Juno, the warm and witty comedy that stole everyone's heart's this year.
When we caught up with the 20-year-old actress, who looks much closer to 16, she's dressed casually and is as down to earth as her character in the film.
Q: When did you realize you could act and had a genuine talent?
A: I started when I was 10, when I was pretty darn young. I always had a huge imagination and played these elaborate games in my mind. I totally fell into acting. It was just circumstance and then one thing led to another and when I was about 15, I was acting. I can remember the specific moment when I felt ‘I love this feeling’ and I wanted to feel that again and again. I enjoy it a lot although like any job, there are things I love and parts that I do not like about it. But I do always realize how lucky I am.
Q: But what don’t you love about your job?
A: I don’t like all the weird pressure that goes along with the job. I don’t like complaining because I know I am so lucky, but the fame and glamour and attention are the aspects I find difficult.
Q: You don’t like glamour, so what is your style?
A: It is based on comfort. I like to be comfortable and I do not like shopping very much. I grew up in Canada, not in LA or New York, so I don’t think about clothes. But it is difficult. People in the film industry tell you that they want you to be yourself, but that doesn’t always feel like it is entirely true. I think people do expect me to dress up.
Q: You look a lot younger than you are, do people generally treat you as younger?
A: I can’t even begin to tell you, it’s a daily thing. I really believe that ageism exists and I suffer from it. I am sometimes treated really badly because I do look young and I do not dress like a lot of young actresses. I have nothing against how they dress – ‘go for it’, but that is not me.
