Too Sweet Tooth
02.05.2008For another, equally indulgent sugar rush, pop into Treacle, located right in the centre of the East End's Columbia Road flower market. It's a flashback experience to the days of the British urban tea houses with perfect pastries to match.
The simplistic, nostalgic air of the place is accented by the vibrant displays of delicious cupcakes on ceramic dessert trays. Wash down those sweet treats with a nice cup of tea or hot chocolate during winter time, or enjoy glasses of refreshing lemonade or ginger beer in the warmer months.
They offer traditional vanilla, luxurious chocolate, and zesty lemon, as well as chocolate with chocolate icing, and a variety of layer cakes like the Jammy Dodger with two layers of vanilla sponge with strawberry jam, topped with vanilla buttercream and fresh strawberries, and the Chocs Away!, which is a double layer chocolate cake with a cream centre and topped with melted chocolate.
To complete this authentic British feel, antique ceramic plates from the post war era and vintage tea sets are available in stock. Treacle offers a relaxing afternoon of comfort food without any fuss, and the option of shopping if you so choose. The store is open every Sunday from 9:30 to 15:30.
If at the end of the day, you have yet to satisfy that cupcake craving, there is still Hummingbird Bakery, a perfect sweet tooth oasis located on Portobello Road with another store on Old Brompton Road near the South Kensington tube stop.
If there isn't a line out the door, go in and stay awhile. Or get it for take away so you can be seen carrying their wonderfully packaged goods in the cute white boxes with their hummingbird logo stuck onto the tops.
You can enjoy a cappuccino in large, teal mugs or a slice of Red Velvet cake with a side of Lemon Meringue Pie if you tire of their fresh, non-preservative cupcakes. But we're almost sure you won't! Their cakes, cookies, and pies are just such a great addition, we suggest you try them too.
You can order them, but make sure to remember that Friday through Sunday are their busiest days and you should call at least at the beginning of the week to make sure you receive them on time.
