Three Shops
15.02.2008OH, for the life of a supermodel. The rocker boyfriends, the wild parties and – of course – that incredible vintage wardrobe. So, ladies, here’s your mission should you chose to accept it - to look effortlessly cool in second-hand chic and possibly bag yourself an indie rock star boyfriend, too. All in the space of three shops.
Destination: Glasgow. With three universities and multiple colleges, the streets are awash with trendy young things in ‘indier-than-thou’ threads with obscure musical taste to boot – but many are so ‘individual’, you can tell that TopShop are doing well. However, tucked away from the main shopping streets, Glasgow is a treasure trove of vintage and second-hand shops that would have the Kates and the Siennas of the world in ecstasy – here’s our top tips for the Kate Moss challenge.
1) Watermelon
603 Great Western Road, Glasgow
Tel: 0141 334 3900
Opening in June 2005, Watermelon on the city’s Great Western Road is a glory-hole of all things gorgeous, on-trend and impossibly individual. Buying in from wholesalers only, Watermelon has everything from 40s tea dresses to 80s lycra all under one roof.
And it’s not that expensive, either. Prices rarely exceeding £25, it’s a favourite with the Glasgow’s students, bargain-hunters and fashionistas. Insignificant as the shop looks at first glance, it’s a den of discovery and excitement, often getting in rare labels and on-trend items to take your breath away.
Perfect for the vintage-hunters amongst us who really do want to stand out from the crowd. Perfect for aftershow parties and the chance to say, “Oh this old thing? It’s Mary Quant, darling. Thanks to Watermelon.”
2) Mr Ben
6 King's Court King Street, Glasgow
Tel: 01415531936
Just like the kid’s TV favourite from when we were young, step inside and magic yourself away into a new you – just don’t expect to become a spaceman in a hurry. However, there is always the chance that you could come out looking like an 80s rock star or a 50s movie great.
