This Charming Man

TAC - I find your music difficult to categorise, so maybe you can help! How would you categorise your music?
Yoav - I'm still waiting for someone to help me with that! I guess “Pop” would be a good description but in the same way that Depeche Mode or The Cure are pop. I guess 21st post modern pop would be good as there are all these genres that I take a bit from but I'd be very happy with “Dark Pop”.
TAC - Are you happy about being compared to other artists? Timbaland is one that crops up quite a lot.
Yoav - I think journalists have to do that. It's about finding some context with music. Instead of just saying, “you should listen to this”, it provides a point of reference for people. Some things I've been compared to I've actually never listened to before, so that's always a bit strange.
I've been referred to as acoustic Nine Inch Nails which I think is kinda cool. Every song's different and I think people latch on to a song and define me through that. So the Timbaland thing was from the song Club Thing which was based on a six month stay in New York, but it's not a complete definition of what I'm about.
TAC - What's the process of songwriting like. As you mix singer/songwriting skills with dance beats, what comes first?
Yoav - Again every song is different. Sometimes there's a lyric and it builds up around it. Sometimes there's a groove and it builds from there. What's really exciting these days is making beats. When with a guitar you're strumming and picking and with hip hop you're using beats. So there's the bridge between the two which is actually a really exciting process.
I'd say it was an organic yet electronic process. It's made my writing much more rhythmic and opened up a whole world of ideas.
TAC - Where do you see yourself going in the future? You've got a string of dates in the UK and you're playing Coachella.
