The Winners and Losers

Cannes Rundown

24.05.2008

Cannes has come to a close once again and of course it’s been a feast for film buffs, fashion enthusiasts and those who like to mingle with the A-listers.

Every year the festival brings us winners and losers in both the film and the fashion stakes and this year is no exception.

So here we give you a quick rundown of some of the highlights of this year’s Festival de Cannes.

The Films

It’s been a bit of a mix and many critics felt at the beginning that this year was all a bit blah to start with picking up towards the end. Of course there was the big blockbuster; Indiana Jones which divided opinions about whether the formula or indeed the leading man could still cut it. For the record, we’re giving it a thumbs up.

Then there was the four-and-a-half hour Che from Steven Soderbergh which featured the stellar acting talent of Benicio del Toro but, at that length, it’s got to be worth the butt ache and it seems not everyone is sure that it is.

One of the biggest hits however has been Clint Eastwood’s The Exchange (which was called The Changeling until a few days before) featuring Angelina Jolie. Both the film and her performance have been garnering praise.

This year has been a big one for documentaries but the most memorable seems to be a biopic of Mike Tyson.

But it was the last film of the event, Laurent Cantet's Entre les Murs, about teaching a tough group of 14-year-olds in a Parisian school, that impressed the most and was awarded the prestigious Palme d'Or.

The Frocks

First let’s get the obvious out of the way. Angelina Jolie looked stunning with her smile as big as her twin-carrying belly. But then she always does so it’s almost not even worth mentioning.

One person who is worth mentioning is Cate Blanchett. The actress gave birth only a month ago and wowed fans and press in an Armani Prive dress and Chopard necklace at the premiere.
