25.07.2008

With his laid back, Reggae infused sound, Natty's perfect to listen to stretched out in the grass enjoying the summer sunshine. We spoke to him about his new album, his love of London and his musical roots.

Three's A Crowd: Hi Natty, how's it going?

Natty: I'm good thanks, very well.

TAC: You obviously draw inspiration from a lot of different sources. What kinds of music do you listen to?

Natty: I listen to mainly African music and music made pre-1980, so either of those two.

TAC: Who's your favourite Reggae artist because you've supported some real legends - Lee Perry, Toots and the Maytals, Horace Andy. What was it like to support such Reggae legends?

Natty: Amazing . I was shivering before I met Lee Perry. He's one of my all time heroes. In terms of what he's done, he invented what we all know and love as reggae. I mean with hi-hats and bass. That particular sound.

As for my favourite, I'd probably say Culture or Burning Spear.

TAC: What about Jimmy Cliff?

Natty
: I'd love to support Jimmy Cilff – I did see him at Glastonbury. Looks like he might have gone a bit past it but he's an utter legend. But if I were to put a CD on, it'd be Burning Spear.

TAC: You've also supported some more contemporary artists like Adele and Kate Nash – what was that like?

Natty: Real cool. Made me feel at home with them, It's different audience to when I was supporting Lee Perry but the reaction was just as good if not even better. Well not even better because it was Lee Perry but I was really pleasantly surprised. I got lots of fans by playing with them.

TAC: Do you see yourself having anything in common with them then?

Natty: Maybe not musically. But I tell you we both kind of talk the same. We all come from London, we all have the same accent.
