The Cat in the Bat
14.02.2008Miss Kittin returns with her second long play offering Batbox, courtesy of her own Nobody’s Bizzness records. Ever the maverick icon, Kittin is a powerful personality within the contemporary music scene, and embraces the darker side of Goth culture while creating tunes with a more broad appeal – meaning you don’t have to be depressed and wear black to appreciate her work.
Having come to prominence in the late 90s electroclash scene, Miss Kittin has long been a crowd pleaser at London’s famed Bugged Out club nights, as well as wowing Ibiza audiences year on year with her unique brand of underground dance music. These really are tunes to be heard at their best through a commercial sound system, while under the influence, and with some form of strobe lighting creating the backdrop – lead single Kittin Is High is the perfect exponent of this, with its trademark repetitive chorus line and thumping, bone chilling bass line. No doubt his is where most people will be exposed to Miss Kittin, as it doesn’t seem to be mainstream commercial success that she craves. These tunes are not radio friendly, and they’re certainly not unit shifters. But they are capable of shaking the very soul of the listener – Solid As A Rockstar pounds to a tremendous crescendo, and Pollution Of The Mind does just that.
This time around Kittin has collaborated artistically with Rob Reger, the dark minded cartoonist, and her album artwork fits the music perfectly as a result. Creatures of the night reign supreme in the world of Miss Kittin, and add a dimension to her ever growing cult.
A bit samey overall, no real degree of diversity, but a decent piece of work from a performer who knows her audience inside out, and is willing to toy with their sensibilities all night long.
