There are some cosmetics that you wouldn’t dream of including in your make-up bag. So what happens when a beauty faux pas becomes a fashionable favourite? Do you fall victim to the trend or keep a cool head and look the other way?

We take a look at spring’s strangest beauty trends and ask whether they are the height of urban cool or a case of beauty gone barmy.

Blue Lips

Blue lips may be associated with staying out in the cold too long, but they are flying the flag for the Technicolor lip trend this season. Art inspired, animated colour painted masterfully onto lips, beauty can’t make much more of a statement than a primary blue pout. It is, without a doubt, a daring and extravagant look.

For pop art cobalt colour, pick up Shu Uemura’s Rouge Unlimited Artist Shade in Blue. It may be designed to blend with other lipsticks to soften bright colours, but worn alone it is scarily on trend.

Let’s face it though, whilst some of us may be tempted to hint towards the blue lip trend, obvious bold tones are horrifyingly sci-fi. Surely the world isn’t ready for this yet? Instead choose a more subtle lip gloss.

In May, MAC Cosmetics will be bringing out a new collection of lip glosses called Dazzleglass. Comet is a pretty blue shade which sparkles with surprising subtlety. If you can’t wait till then, B Never Too Busy to be Beautiful Lip Gloss in Bluetooth is pale cerulean which makes teeth appear a bright white shade. Try to wear it with a tan to avoid the corpse effect.

Oiled Hair

Greasy hair may be met with grimaces but this season oiled locks are all the rage. Shiny, wet look locks glistened down the runways at Just Cavalli, Mui Mui and Issa.

How you style your hair is up to you; wear it up, in tumbling waves or slicked back, but make sure it is ultra shiny and oiled to the max. Gel may stroke fear into the hearts of women, but sticky textures and flaky results needn’t plague you.

When hair is wet, apply a wet look gel like Nexxus Exxtra Gel from the roots to halfway through the length of the hair, leaving the ends free of product.
