Stranger than Paradise
05.06.2008Constantly travelling around without ever managing to actually settle down or find what he wants. The whole film follows him moving around New York City, bumping into people of the night, very slowly. I couldn't enjoy this film, it was quite and empty, but without charm and stillness like Stranger than Paradise. This is probably the least enjoyable of the box set, but it's still very representative of Jarmusch's early work.
Each disk has a couple of extras, however the best features are on Down by Law . Including a brilliantly trippy Tom Waits video, a handful of deleted scenes, and the best bit, three brilliant phone conversations between Jarmusch and the three guys from the film. If you're a fan or even if you've never seen any of his work, this is definitely where to start, if only for Down by Law. The films are all quiet and beautifully stark despite being somewhat flawed by their amateur like approach. You can really see how Jarmusch has developed his trademark minimal dialogue and awkward interaction with the camera since Stranger than Paradise.
