Soul of 2008?
28.01.2008And the Dusty references aren’t just because they have a similar sounding name.
It’s something of a time for soul-pop, and “Rockferry” is indeed that. It’s a big, melancholy love song, which seems to speak biographically of relocation, and a sense of home: I’d move to Rockferry tomorrow/And I’d build my house, baby, with sorrow… It aches of a kind of old-world naivety, a world before mediated networking proliferated, and it is thus a fitting single for someone who, despite the references, is fresh enough for her official website to still be under construction.
It remains to be seen whether the hype will give way to legs in the business. It may well do. Of the eighteen U.K. shows currently listed on her myspace, only three aren’t sold out. And you have to wonder, in our earlier Google search, if Steve Duffy is pissed. Or DuffyLondon. Or daytime TV star Patrick Duffy. Or maybe even my friend, Ericka Duffy. Only a matter of months ago they would have been top of the Google listings. There should be little doubt though that in a few months, they probably won’t feature at all.
Duffy’s debut album “Rockferry” will be released nationwide on March 3rd.
