Son of Rambow

Skills on Toast!

25.03.2008

At one point he says “I think you're mostly better off without parents. That's what I reckon”.

But it's the relationship between Will and Carter that is the jewel in the crown. They complement each other perfectly - Carter's initial bullying of Will turns into a fantastic friendship, fueled by the desire to make the perfect movie.. Both characters feel believable – who hasn't had friends that they've tried to make do things because it seemed like a good idea at the time? (I once bet a friend that he couldn't jump a ditch of stinging nettles on his bmx -you can guess how that ended) and as a viewer you feel lucky to be involved in Will and Lee's adventures.

Son of Rambow is as believable as Will's drawings of flying dogs. But it's this youthful exuberance, this willingness to try anything no matter how ridiculous it may seem that makes it fantastic. It's witty, charming and earns every one of its on-screen laughs and beneath the great storytelling and colourful characters is a heart bigger than Will's imagination.
