Singles Roundup

28.01.2008

An interesting week for singles with plenty of rehashing, remixing and rejigging. It’s a good mix this week with R&B, Indie and a bit of Pop to gorge those musical hunger pangs.

Atomic Kitten - Anyone Who Had A Heart
Atomic Kitten are releasing a cover of Cilla Back’s classic song in support of Liverpool’s The Number One Project. After terrorising the airwaves with Whole Again for months on end and demolishing a brilliant Bangles’ song the Kittens called it a day. But they’re back and actually this remake isn’t that bad. Their voices have matured and the harmonies are surprisingly pleasant. Hey, it’s for charity so why not.

Cassie – Is it you
The naughty girl next door made it big after sexy R&B track, Me and You was released. She made men drool and women start doing more sit ups. Followed by the not quite as successful but still pretty good Long Way 2 Go. Her new single doesn’t even come close - a mid tempo ballad which sounds like the lyrics and melody were written separately and stuck together. It’s sweet and all but doesn’t quite cut it.

Michael Jackson featuring Will.I.Am – The Girl is Mine
A new version of the original duet between Jackson and Paul McCartney except in this version the Beatle has been replaced by a Black Eyed Pea. Of all the songs that Michael Jackson made this has to be one of the weakest and this remake is even worse despite Will.I.Am being an immensely talented producer. The annoying outbursts of ‘She mine, she mine. She Like the Way I Rock,’ really grate over a song that already grated in the first place.

Hot Chip – Ready For The Floor
Hot Chip appear to be suffering no ill effects from the pressure of following up a Mercury nominated debut album - comeback single Ready For The Floor has all the same groove and synthy atmosphere of Over and Over, and more besides. Expect dancefloors to pulsate to this all year.

Kelly Rowland – Work
This is interesting. First there’s the original version which has a pretty good base track but with no variation between the verses and chorus and weak vocals, it’s an unexciting song.
