Single Of The Week
24.02.2008So far, 2008 seems to be the year for big unique voices from where you least expect.
First there was Adele with Chasing Pavements and now there’s Duffy. But Duffy has one over Adele in that her first single, Mercy went straight to number one on downloads alone. With the hard copy released this week we have no doubt the Welsh lovely will stay at number one.
Duffy came second in the recent BBC Sound of 2008 poll with other youngster Adele taking the top spot. With them both battling it out this year it’s difficult not to compare them despite their ultimately very different sounds. Both have been described as the new Amy Winehouse but unlike Winehouse’s vocal acrobatics all over the place both Duffy and Adele keep their unique melodies refreshingly simple.
So, what is it about Mercy that’s got everyone so worked up. Aside from Duffy’s awesome voice, Mercy is so catchy you’ll be singing it all day long. With a soulful sixties vibe Mercy is nod your head and dance on your chair fabulous.
Adele’s album managed to bag the top spot on the album chart so I guess we’ll wait and see if Duffy’s which is released next month achieves the same.
Let the battle of the big voiced Brits begin!
