Ryan Reynolds

Star of Definitely Maybe

Interview

Ryan Reynolds

10.02.2008

Three's A Crowd caught up with Ryan Reynolds to chat about his new movie, Definitely Maybe, as well as his upcoming project with Julia Roberts and eating obscene amounts of Hot Dogs.

In the film Reynolds plays Will, an advertising executive going through a divorce. He is convinced by his daughter Maya, (played by Abigail Breslin,) to tell her the story of when he was an idealistic young man in New York City who fell in love with three women. Will changes the names of the women so his daughter, and the audience, are left guessing as to which woman is Abigail's mother.

We caught up with Reynolds while he was in London promoting the film. Though jet lagged and exhausted from a day of interviews, Reynolds was good fun and made us chuckle with his dry sense of humour.

Three's A Crowd: You seem a bit young for fatherhood but it’s not the first time you’ve played a dad is it?

Ryan Reynolds: No actually. In The Nines, Elle Fanning was my daughter. I only go with A-list child lineage. The real trick for this film was to be exact right age because the character has to go eight years either side of 30. I have a 16 year story so I have to be believable at 38 and 22.

TAC: You have a nice chemistry with Abigail, had you got to know her before?

RR: Yeah, we went out for drinks. No, we got to know one another. She’s an unusual kid in that she’s fine with being a kid and I think in Hollywood and pretty much anywhere that’s an unusual thing. I guess that’s what makes her so special on screen. Also, with her I didn’t try to make our dynamic be anything in particular. I just was invested in whatever our dynamic was and putting that on screen. Even if she hated me, that’s what was going to go on screen as I think unless it’s authentic, it’s going to be bullshit.

TAC: What was it about this role that attracted you to it?

RR: I think with most romantic comedies within the first three pages it’s just painfully obvious what’s going to happen but with this script I didn’t know what was going to happen up until the last three pages.
