Razzle Dazzle
06.02.2008Robin Ince is a comedian, writer, actor, blogger who is interested in just about everything. From touring with his own stand-up act, supporting Ricky Gervais and starring in The Office, to most recently co-writing new Australian mockumentary 'Razzle Dazzle' which is out on DVD this month. We caught up with him to talk about the film, reality TV and chimps.
'Razzle Dazzle' explores the creepy world of pushy parents, child dancers and the phenomenon that is 'stage school. Ince got together with co-writer Carolyn Wilson, and they decided they wanted to do something which took some of the fun of camp Australian cinema, citing Muriel's Wedding and Strictly Ballroom as examples.
“The two things I love are films and comedy,” says Ince so it was only natural that his career would follow those two lines. It's always interesting to see how comedians get into the industry. Do they just wake up one day and realise they are funny? Ince says, “I was always very excited by the thought of doing stand-up comedy.” But more than that, he says he just wanted to find out more about, well, pretty much everything.
Ince describes himself as a cynic rather than a sceptic, “A lot of the show is about rallying against the media but I love talking about just interesting things I've come across.” Ince is particularly fascinated by the animal world. “Chimps wearing a cockroach on their head thinking it’s a hat,” are one of his favourites.
When he's not making people laugh on stage, Ince is a keen blogger. He likes to write about anything on TV, his favourite books, shows or just have a little rant. When asked about it, Ince says that keeping his blog going is partly a desire to spread some of the random things he's learnt and discovered but it's also a way of keeping himself from feeling alone when on tour. “When you're on tour you're on a stage in front of 400 people and then you go home and you're alone.”
On working with Ricky Gervais, Ince says “People think he acts that way just in front of the camera but that's what my life is like whenever I'm with him.” Gervais' Extras recently won a Golden Globe, we wondered if Ince gets that kind of desire to step into the limelight.
