Posh Spice
07.05.2008The menu was a far cry from the Indian food we have come to adopt as our own on our fair Isle, but more contemporary cuisine given the Indian slant or Indo-fusion (if there is such a genre). If you like good fresh ingredients, stunning presentation, and a little kick to your food, then Rasoi does it ever so well.
Crispy Spiced Scallop with Bloody Mary Lassi Jelly (hmmmm!), Beetroot flavoured Chicken Tikka with Crab Chutney and Crispy Onion and Potato Bhajia, and
Tandoori flavoured Lamb Cutlet with Masala Mash and Creamy Black Lentils laced with Truffle Oil were a few examples of where the combination of flavours simply mesmerised.
There were also a few “Blumenthalesque” moments worth mentioning, such as the Roasted Field Mushrooms with Wild Mushroom Khichdi Makhni Ice Cream which produced a melt-in-the-mouth moment, and also the moment when the waiter reverently “blessed” our Grilled Chilli Lobster with Spiced Cocoa Powder that was wrapped in muslin. Once the
dust had settled, it revealed how well chocolate and chilli combine together, executed here with refined subtlety.
I can’t really say there was anything I didn’t like about Rasoi.
Maybe some may find the bill, weighing in at a hefty £125 per head, a little tall, but that said it did really feel like a special
occasion, with just enough glamour and intrigue to maintain interest and excitement throughout. (Also, if you don’t opt for the “Gourmand” then you could experience it for considerably less!) In retrospect I did also polish off 6 glasses of fine wine and a beautifully made Kir, so it’s enough of a tribute that I remember it at all!
