Martha Wainwright's haunting vocals and wry humour (how many singer/songwriters can boast a song called Bloody Mother Fucking Asshole?) have established her as one of the most promising vocalists of recent years.

Sister to big brother Rufus and daughter of the legendary Loudon Wainwright III, I spoke to her about marriage and moving out of the shadow of a famous family.

Three's A Crowd - Hi Martha, how's it going?

Martha Wainwright
- I'm well thanks, I'm sitting at the bar drinking a Bloody Mary, waiting for my tour bus to turn up...

TAC - Urgh, I don't like Bloody Marys.

MW - Well that's not going to work! [laughs}

TAC - Well anyway, your new album I Know You're Married But I've Got Feelings Too. Tell me about the title. Is it about someone in particular?

MW - I suppose so. It's about a few people. It's about past unrequited loves... which often times actually end up being more interesting friendships. I thought the title was funny. It's a phrase from the title track Bleeding All Over You.

TAC - Now that you've got married, do you think your song writing will change dramatically?

MW - I'm certainly more happy in love. There seems to be enough sadness and desperation for me to sing about it. I'm a bit older, I can look outside myself for the subject matter and be able to talk about other things. On the record, there are songs about the war in Iraq, about illness, about suicide. There are plenty of dark things.

TAC - Should you really be writing albums with titles like that, now that you're supposed to be in a state of wedded bliss?

MW - Well, I married a smart person who has a sense of humour. As a writer that like to push the envelope and be subversive, I believe that that's necessary

I've been careful not to offend or be damaging.
