One GIANT can of HAIRSPRAY!!
29.05.2008Ok...so I finally saw hairspray the musical and its safe to say i have ALOT to say about it!
Colours, Lights, Pink, Big Hair, Big costumes and a BIG can of hairspray.. all these things make the experience of seeing this show a delight!
The spectacle that is the exterior of the Shaftesbury Theatre conjures up a child-like excitement that makes the anticipation of the show even more of an adrenaline rush!! The theatre is decorated and maintained beautifully and gives an aire of grandeur. Perfect for a show as big as Hairspray.
With a cast of Michael Ball, Leanne Jones and Ben James-Ellis.. its definately not a show to be missed or forgotten!!
One of the main reasons I went to see show this was to see Michael Ball..because i am a big fan of him and have never seen him live. I turned up at the theatre only to learn that as of 3 weeks ago he takes Mondays off...guess what day I went to see the show?!!!! :( So now you know.... dont book on a monday if you want to see Mr Ball or you will start the night off with disappointment! But dont worry it doesnt last that long...
I saw his understudy 'Adam Price' who was absoloutely brilliant!! Strangely enough he looked like Michael Ball! His character acting was very comical and well played, his voice was really fabulous and I am glad I got to see him!!! At one point in his duet (Timeless to Me)with the character 'Wilbur Turnblad' (also an understudy-Dermot Canavan) one of the adult aimed jokes set them into giggles and seeing a moment 'out of character' was actually a nice touch...had us all in stitches!! :)
I must say that having heard Ben James-Ellis would be playing the part of 'Link' I was a little dubious as I watched him in 'Any Dream Will Do' and thought he had great potential but still needed training to strengthen his vocals and gain acting skills...BUT to my surprise he was really very good! He played the character very well, he was comical, cheesy, sweet..everything 'Link' needs to be and his vocals were far from weak..he has improved by miles and has claimed that role!!

Hairspray is brilliant. I actually prefer the movie though. Old and new. The new girl in the film is soo cute..bless her socks!! BUT ricky lake is still my all time favorite.
Michael Ball is GREAT!!! Travolta is EVEN BETTER THOUGH!!!!!!
GO SEE IT IF YOU HAVENT!!
Good review by the way! :)
