My, Oh My!

10.04.2008

The creative set is used wisely, and a pretty, white Greek hotel is converted with simple movements into different rooms and scenes. The lighting is colourful and blends well with each wild song and dancing number. There's “Dancing Queen,” “I Have a Dream,” “Voulez-Vous,” “Take a Chance on Me,” and so many more of your old favourites.

The cast is enthusiastic and very into each scene, whether belting out a tune or jumping in the air, their energetic attitude is contagious. Even if Abba was before your time, or you were never really a fan, it's pretty easy to be swept up by this funky use of light and song that creates such an entertaining atmosphere and can be enjoyed by all ages.

I was a little afraid that the plot would seem forced, scenes created just as an opportunity to weave in another Abba hit. But it never felt that way, and honestly, unless I consciously thought about it, I forgot the songs weren't made for the story to begin with!

If you weren't standing up and clapping throughout the show, you will be by the end. What you think is a nice, calm ending to this musical, is soon converted into a disco hall of all the Abba hits. It is truly a night filled with feel-good fun, a well flowing plot, and an enthusiastic cast.

Let's just say that some people in the crowd got so into the finale, that one jumped up onto the stage and had to be forcibly removed by a cast member. I guess when you're bursting with a love for Abba and dancing, what else can you do?
