Life Jim...
07.04.2008JN – No, it wasn't disappointing – I'm actually afraid of cowboys; they're kind of angry people and I'm not a particularly angry person. Also I don't drink whiskey out of dirty glasses.
TAC - So a wasp dressed as a cowboy would be pretty terrifying for you?
JN - Yeah...that'd be pretty scary
TAC – Well are you scared of clowns because a lot of people are?
JN - Yeah, I'm scared of clowns too
TAC - So a film like “Wasps On a Plane” would be pretty terrifying for you?
JN- Yeah absolutely. “Cowboys On a Plane” – now that'd be a scary movie!
TAC - The new album's got a central concept – a doomed astronaut adrift in space. Are you a fan of prog? The idea of a “Concept Album” is something that might cause a lot of down to earth fans to recoil in horror – how did that idea come about?
JN - I didn't mean for it to be prog. I didn't actually mean for it to have a concept. I've got myself into trouble by saying that it's about something and then having to explain myself. It's about sentiment, a bit of a sad sort of sentiment. I've got no idea if it's a metaphor for anything- not sure if it's the end of my career! Er, it's mainly about somebody looking back at his life and all the trivial bollocks he's been through.
TAC - Slightly different subject matter this time round though – weren't the old songs about the mundanities of everyday life? Space exploration seems a bit of a leap?
JN - It's actually mainly about that too. Just the first two or three tracks are about space. It's about innocence. It's a life retrospective – life flashing before someone's eyes. I've never experienced that myself but I have got a cough at the moment which could be terminal that I picked up when I was in New York. We did some touring in the States for about two and a half weeks which I was really looking forward to.
