Kitchen Scraps
26.02.2008Flicking through her recipes produced no sense of the salivating “ooh, I must try that” I associate with good cookbooks. The only recipes I felt tempted to try were those with no “cheat” ingredients, just naturally simple recipes (“Greek lamb with lemon and garlic” has, heroically, only lamb, lemons, garlic and parsley as ingredients) but to be honest, if I want a quick meal, I’m more than happy with Jamie’s pasta suggestions, who for all his annoying “mockney”, does know how to mix simple ingredients well. And I can pick them all up at my local Sainsbury’s – bliss.
Any book that inspires non-cooks to take up the spatula must be praised, but I’m afraid I have my doubts with this one. For those of us who are already happy taking 5 minutes of their day to whip up a pasta-lemon-prawns extravaganza, making these recipes as they stand will be nothing short of a chore. In fact, I intend to try her Shepherd’s pie, substituting the frozen mash, canned mince and frozen diced onion for the real thing though, of course…
