I Don't Give A Damn

29.04.2008

Lethally for a musical, the disposable tunes which are liberally crowbarred into the work are a distraction that does little to advance the plot.

Yes, there are some fine vocal performances, especially Natasha Yvette Williams’ Mammy, and Jina Burrows’ Prissy, but these stars are hitched to a wagon that’s barely roadworthy .

Other performances are less soulful. While Darius Danesh makes a stiff but oily Rhett Butler, he is at least easy on the ear. The same cannot be said for Jill Paice’s Scarlett O’Hara, whose higher register is uncomfortably shrill.

The whole enterprise is reminiscent of TV shows like I’d Do Anything, where faked emotion is exchanged for dutiful applause. Depressing.
