Hey Boy Hey Girl
12.05.2008TAC - What kind of dancing did you do?
KW - Ballroom dancing. It was so uncool at the time, even more uncool than it is now. People thought you were really weird. I grew up about fifteen minutes outside Manchester, where there were farms and stuff and people used to ride horses or learn ballroom dancing at the local working men's club. There wasn't much else to do.
TAC -You're based in Salford now. What's the best thing about it?
KW - There's a grittiness about it that I quite like. The centre of Manchester's beautiful now – they've regenerated it and it looks amazing, but it's hard for bands and artists to pay rent. In places
like Islington Mill in Salford, the bloke who runs it is an artist himself, and he works so hard to try and keep the rent cheap so that new artists and actors have somewhere to work. It's given people a lot of inspiration.
TAC - And the worst thing about Salford?
KW - It's fucking grey [laughs].
TAC- You're going to the States in June. Is that the first time you've
played there?
KW - No, we went over for about three days just before Christmas and did a show in LA and a show in New York. Then we went back again to play South By Southwest [the industry showcase in Austin, Texas], doing about three shows a day, and after that we played a few dates in LA, San Francisco, Seattle, Chicago and New York. Now we're going back for a full tour.
The Apple advert we did just came out over there, which has helped to get things moving for us. We're really looking forward to playing there. It's a bit weird being in America, because you think it's kind of the same as here, having grown up with it – but it's totally different in a lot of ways. It's nice to immerse yourself in the culture.
Being on tour, though, you see a lot of places out of a plane window or out of a taxi window and then you get to the mic stand and that's it.
