TAC – That's a hard road though...

JG - It is. There are quite a lot of generic bands out there that are successful Maybe that would be easier! [laughs]. Lyrically, I try to say something – to have lyrics that really ring true in some way. It's a personal thing. When I feel like I've said something that resonates at a certain level with me, that's when I feel good about putting it out. There are good lyricists out there, but there are a lot of throw away lyrics about too. I want to get better with my relationship with words, I feel that you can always get better at that. It was important getting to a point where I feel I can comfortably stand behind this.

TAC - Do you think lyrics are necessarily important to music?

JG - It depends on what the angle of the music is. I appreciate a Neil Young song for example. They resonate in a way that's true to me. Maybe, you know there a Michael Jackson song that resonates in a different way. Billie Jean is one of the hugest pop songs ever but there doesn't have to be some crazy super deep message. Radiohead for example. To me they put out some music that rings true. Sometimes you listen to the lyrics and you're like, “what?” but it sounds beautiful That's something I'm trying to get to.

TAC - You hardly ever bother with recording studios. How does that work? How do you make the choice of where to record?

JG - Um. A lot of it was just when I was making the album. There wasn't a budget, I couldn't go to a posh studio and spend three months doing this. I wanted to make a great album and use the tools that I had. So whether it was borrowing a mic from a friend or using my own stuff that I had at my house. It took a long time, I had to experiment a lot till I got to a sound I was happy with. If I re-recorded it now, it would sound different. I wanted to document where I was at the time.
