Jacob Golden crafts haunting, poignant songs with thoughtful lyrics. Fresh from an appearance on Later with Jools Holland, I spoke to him about his album Revenge Songs, his musical heroes and working at a nudist spa.

Three's A Crowd – Hi Jacob, how's it going?

Jacob Golden – I'm good thanks, I'm in a car.

TAC – That's very rock 'n' roll, where are you?

JG – Erm, that's a good question. Er...Hammersmith I think.

TAC – Anyway....Why is the new album called Revenge Songs? Who is it revenge against?

JG - Um I think as with a lot of things, it's more of a metaphorical title. I put out a couple of records with Rough Trade and I came to a place where I was disillusioned with whole process of putting out records. I wanted to get back to making music, where there's that pureness about making albums for the joy of it. That's where I tried to get to.

The record was made with no music industry involvement and the title came to me at the beginning of the process and it seemed to make sense.

It's about sort of a personal overcoming of mental baggage, about getting back to a point where I felt good about music.

TAC - It's been called a break-up album. What do you think about that?

JG - I never actually considered it that. I guess I can see where that came from. There are aspects about relationships that you can breathe into it. Whether it's about band or a romantic idea, it's just about life.

TAC - Who are the artists that you most look up to?

JG - I'd say PJ Harvey's early stuff definitely. She's one of those artists that there's a rawness about. I mean, she's one of those big artists that have still managed to keep this raw quality about her music. That's where I'd like to be, so I think it's kind of a good model for me. It's more about making great albums and grow with it than have solely commercial success.
