G Force

Jonathan Ansell has come along way since he first appeared on our screens as part of G4 singing an operatic version of Bohemian Rhapsody in front of a bemused Simon Cowell.

After losing out to Steve Brookstein in the final, G4 went on to reach number 1 with their first album, sell a further million and a half albums, sell out four tours and perform at the Royal Albert Hall.

Jonathan, the cute blond tenor who wowed judges in the X Factor and mums around the country is now going it alone with his first solo album after bagging a million pound deal with Universal's new classical and jazz division.

'Tenor at the Movies' is a showcase of Jonathan’s stunning vocals to the melody of some classic movie themes. The ones you won’t recognise by name, you will by melody.

In Parla Piu Piano the deep tones sung in Italian are stunning. Similarly in Se from Cinema Paradiso the hairs on the end of your arms will stand on end.

But the most beautiful song on the whole album is Un Giorno Per Noi sung with Hayley Westenra. Together, the tenor and the soprano sound sublime.

However, the songs which are sung in Italian, Spanish and French are strangely more emotive than those sung in English which tend to move away from classical and more towards musical theatre.

Similarly, some songs which were originally just instrumentals shouldn't have been tampered with. A prime example is Race to the End from Chariots of Fire which just sounds odd with vocals.

My Own True Love from Gone with the Wind sounds a bit Disney on the album and sounds much better a capella. I know this because, as you can see from the video, Jonathan serenaded me with a private rendition.

Okay so it wasn’t a serenade as such, more a demonstration. Okay, Okay it wasn't a totally private rendition, there were a few other people in the room. Anyway, he has an incredible voice and I have to say, as beautiful as his voice is on the album, I think you would have to hear him live to really get the full effect.
