Celebrity Designs
17.12.2007Celebrity designer collections are regularly thrust upon us to varying levels of success. While occasionally there is room for praise, many if not most celebrity attempts to become the next Matthew Williamson or Christian Louboutin, seem destined to fail. This is not an unjust passing statement, it is simply due to the abundance of inane faith / delusion these types have in their own hype. You can't help but snigger a little when they seem surprised – no? Too harsh? Just me then.
A cynic would call a fashion line ‘designed’ by a celebrity nothing more then a carefully executed PR stunt – but credit where credit is due. An autumn / winter collection completed, drawn and produced would, even in celebrity ‘la la’ land, have taken some effort and probably deserves a tiny bit more attention then the latest drunken debacles of the D list.
So as celebrity designers go, here are a few choice names to look out for. In a minefield of attention grabbing, badly-dressed desperados attempting to inflict their god-awful style onto your poor ‘impressionable’ selves – it is worth knowing who and who not to trust.
Unless you have been living under a rock for the last year, you would have heard something about Kate Moss designing a range (now also a second winter range) for global fashion staple Top Shop. Her range is rather good, although not the stuff design-inspired dreams are made of. The collection is basically her look – short shorts, waistcoats, skinny jeans and choice leather jackets. Good looking yes, but a bit bland and hardly worth the hours of queuing and mass hysteria that occurred when Miss Moss posed in the windows of the Oxford Street flagship.
Far more interesting is the Spanish threesome that is Mango and the Cruz sisters. Penelope and Monica Cruz have designed a range for the fashion house that has left critics rather ashamed of themselves. Their range is seductive and flawless, oozing with Spanish flare and vintage red carpet glamour.
