A Little Jumpy
14.02.2008Hayden Christensen and Rachel Bilson star in new sci-fi flick Jumper which is out today. We caught up with Hayden, who plays teleporting David Rice and Rachel, his on-screen (and possibly off-screen) love interest to chat about the film, kissing and celebrity death matches.
For some actors, Michael Cain among them, the exotic nature of the film's location is part of the appeal. Was that the case for you two?
HC: Doug's approach to filmmaking is quite unique - literally showing up with a camera at my door and saying let's go walk around New York for the day or Paris for the day. We were in Paris for five hours.
RB: (fiddling with her pen) Yeah we weren't supposed to be shooting there. We were shooting in Rome and Doug said let's pop over to Paris and you can just walk around the Eiffel Tower and I'll shoot you. We were flying to Rome and we were sitting next to each other and the second we woke up from the eight hour trip he was rolling the camera on me and that shot is now in the film. It doesn't match continuity or anything but it doesn't matter. That's Doug you know. He had his home camera and that footage made it into the picture.
HC: I really like to travel and so when I read the script and saw all the different locations, I got excited. We spent a lot of time on planes in transit. I wish I could teleport.
Do you think with this film you'll stop being seen as Anakin Skywalker?
HC: I don't know if I have overcome it. I think that's something that will follow me for the rest of my life. I think there will always be people at the front of the hotel waiting with Star Wars pictures. I had a great experience with making those films and I'm very fond of everything that brought.
You both made your name in a particular role, did that help you with other roles or did you find yourself being typecast?
HC: I don't think Doug cast me off of Star Wars. He was more interested in Shattered Glass which is what he spoke to me about and there were certain aspects of my performance in that which he was interested in but Star Wars opened a lot of doors for me.

Nothing wrong with being cute but dumb - better than being ugly and dumb - most men are the latter, after all.
